“Dane Cobain (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK) is an independent poet, musician and storyteller with a passion for language and learning. When he’s not in front of a screen writing stories and poetry, he can be found working on his book review blog or developing his website, www.danecobain.com. His debut novella, No Rest for the Wicked, was released in the summer of 2015.”

Now onto the interview…

Tell us about your journey of publishing No Rest for the Wicked and what it was like to become a published author.

“Good question! No Rest for the Wicked started out after I had a bad dream and jotted down a few notes about it, which I then developed into the plot for a novella. I wrote it when I was in my second year at university, and then sat on it for a while. In the meantime, I was working on all sorts of other stuff, and I also graduated and went into full-time employment, and then launched my book blog, SocialBookshelves.com.

Through my book blog, I met Jesse James Freeman, who’s a fellow author who was working for a publishing company called Booktrope. Booktrope were accepting submissions, and so I submitted No Rest for the Wicked and my writing journey began from there. Booktrope, alas, is now defunct, and so my books are now self-published, with the exception of No Rest for the Wicked which was picked up by Dragon Moon Press.”

Looking on your website I see you are involved in poetry, screenwriting, blogging, and book reviews. Do you prefer one area of interest over another? How do you juggle all your projects?

“To be honest, I see them all as part of the same overall body of work. Sure, it’s hard to juggle them all – you just have to work hard and put a lot of hours in. It all feels like it’s worth it in the end.”

How and or when did you realize literature was your passion?

“I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t start to take writing seriously until I was sixteen or so. Once I got started, I got hooked on it, and I haven’t looked back!”

What is your favorite element of a thriller novel?

“I’m not sure if there’s any element in particular, but I like the fact that thrillers are generally gripping reads which keep you turning the pages. Whenever I pick up a book that feels like I’m whizzing through it, I’m happy.”

I see you have a fiction novel coming out in July. Congrats! Tell us about Former.ly. What inspired the novel?

“Actually, it was released on June 11th! Former.ly tells the story of a rise and fall of a social network where users are able to post updates that are visible only to themselves until after their dead, when their profiles go live to the world. I guess it was inspired by the fact that I work in social media marketing – they say that you should write about what you know about, and so I did. So far, the early reviews have been pretty positive!”
