Why I Chose Not to Name the Male Lead

Not naming the male lead was a decision I wrestled with throughout the year or so I spent writing Deliverance. However, in order for my mentality to be understood, I feel as if I should first share where the concept for this book originated from.

It came to me in a dream…

Yes, as cliché as it might sound, this is how Deliverance was born. I’m still able to recall the vivid, detailed scenarios vividly playing out in my subconscious today, as if it were yesterday. Have you ever had such a realistic dream that you wake up feeling as it was all real? That’s what I experienced.

I’m not usually a morning person, but I hopped out of bed immediately with the intent of writing down every single thing while it was still fresh in my mind. I must’ve scribbled about 12 pages’ worth of information and left it at that. I didn’t get started on Deliverance until months after my daughter was born, and I worked on this particular story on and off for about a year. As the plot developed, I analyzed the overall story, looking deeper into the male lead’s background. I realized that although every character needs a name, label, alias—should have one in fact—it didn’t make much sense to do the same with the male lead. At least, not right away.

His history is a complicated one, and as such I wanted his reality to play into every aspect of his life, including something as simple or common as having a name. For someone raised in a hostile, volatile environment, and used as a violent tool against enemies, I figured the male lead’s creator wouldn’t bother naming his creation, but referring to him by either a number or some sobriquet, which is why in the end I made the risky decision to allow him to go unnamed for most of the novel for the sake of credibility. I believe it worked well in the end. It makes him more believable, relatable even.

As readers delve into the world I’ve shaped in Deliverance, they’ll connect the dots, and paint a broader picture of the male lead’s life, background, and his overall purpose. I won’t go into detail out of respect for those who haven’t read the book yet. However, I will say that how I chose to address this minor bump in the road is one of my favorite scenes in the book and I sincerely hope others enjoy it as much as I still do.

kristy centeno.jpgAbout the Author

It is hard to put into too many words everything that describes me so I’m going to go with the basics.

Let me start out by saying I’m a busy mother of five beautiful, and healthy children. I work hard and have little time to myself. When I do have free time I prefer to indulge in a good book, be it by reading one or coming up with one of my own. I’m an avid reader, blogger, and part-time author. I would love to write full-time but my busy schedule doesn’t allow for more than a couple of hours each day if that.

When I’m not writing, I’m blogging about books, their authors, or about the blogs that are dedicated to helping us promote our work.

Currently, I’m working on finishing several manuscripts including the sequels to Secrets of the Moon, the next book in the Forgotten Divinity series, and a sequel to Deliverance. Plus, I manage two blogs so as you can imagine I have plenty to do.

I love books. I have a passion for plotting and writing. And I like to share my love for literature with the world.
