The butterflies started the book. It all began while I was listening to The Cure, and the song “Caterpillar” came on. I’ve heard the song a million times, but this time it spoke to me, whispering the plot of the story into my ear. I knew no one had written anything like this, and I knew there were so many possibilities as to where I could take the story. Making Butterfly Bones a contemporary science fiction allowed me to create possibilities for cures, as well as having the main character experience things that no human was ever meant to experience—altering nature and cheating death, all the while teetering between fiction and reality. So I didn’t choose to use caterpillars and butterflies, they chose me. I believe all cures can be found in nature. Science fiction allowed the venue to explore this in a way that pulls the reader into the world of a scientist obsessed with saving his daughter—and a young woman who would trade it all for a loving relationship with her father.
