Guest Post – Falling into Writing
Lots of authors are asked how they became writers. This question makes me a bit uneasy because I didn’t fall into writing in a professional way. I didn’t study journalism or creative writing. I wasn’t making up stories in grade school. I did write pretty good papers. Penned poetry since age nine. And wrote and edited newsletters over the years. I read a lot.
But as for writing fiction, specifically funny romance??? No.
A friend challenged several of us to write the opening paragraph of a story using the word window. My heart went heavy because my friend knew I wanted to write. I had confessed to Handsome how I wished I could write like my favorite mystery author, Dick Francis. But I never tried. Never picked up a pen, pencil, or played on my computer…until she asked that question. I wanted badly to answer, but didn’t want to look stupid. So I fluttered my hand and said, “I don’t have anything.” My friend said that was okay and to email something later in the week.
Yikes! I was still on the hook. And a part of me carried the burden of “I have to or else.” So one day, I sat down and began typing, letting anything and everything spill onto the page. In fact, I was a tad obsessed. But I worked and worked and ultimately, felt comfortable in letting my friend read what I’d done. She did and passed it back, saying, “Keep going.”
If you want to be good at anything, like knitting, you have to practice. And so I did. I took classes and craft read books and kept on working. I entered contests for feedback, and when one entry was returned with “Why are you writing?” scribbled on the judge’s scoring page, I gritted my teeth and thought no one but me can determine my destiny and kept on working.
Thirty short stories and essays and two books have been published of my work. Ya, that feels good.
So what does this mean for you? If you want to be published, be good at hula hoop, or run a marathon, you have to work hard all the time. Don’t give up. Work! And in doing so, you are better off. You learned something.
