Visual Inspiration Guest Post with Jessica Prather

Meet Jessica Prather.

Jessica Prather is the author of the debut series, The Traitor’s Crux, coming out November 14th, 2017. She grew up in the small town of Craig, Colorado, which was only known for its hunting, horrible winters, and the ski resort about 45 minutes away. Growing up, Jessica spent her time immersed in reading, filling up notebooks with bad fiction, and enjoying the outdoors! She currently lives in Utah with her very large, very sassy German Shepherd/Lab mix named Avery.

Now how does she get inspiration for writing?

Visual Inspiration for Writers

I’ve been so privileged to meet so many amazing readers and writers through my journey as a debut author. It’s so cool to meet people from all over the world that without this book, I would have never been able to chat with!

Recently I was asked how I find inspiration for my books. In all honesty, inspiration is everywhere, you just have to look. A lot of The Traitor’s Crux was influenced by historical and political events. I use music, TV, books… literally anything. But I’m also a really visual writer. I love having images laid out in front of me to aid the process. That’s where Pinterest comes in.

I love Pinterest.

I abuse Pinterest.

Seriously, I use it non-stop. I have boards for everything, ranging from characters to settings, to writing resources and useful websites. This is Kenadee’s character board, which I keep secret for the sake of future novels.

I also have a public board for Traitor’s one and two, as well as a board for all of its characters. You can find them here:

Some other ways I use visuals when writing:

  • Google Drive: an amazing program because you can share everything! I mostly use spreadsheets to color-coordinate characters and their role in the story, make outlines, timelines, and more.
  • Evernote
  • iPhone notes: use the writing feature.

Social media! (Instagram mainly)
Scrivener: A great program with many hidden features. Below is one of the early character boards for Kenadee (she’s changed a little since then).

(Yes, that’s right. I’ve shamelessly cast the movie that probably won’t ever happen).

But really, the possibilities are endless! There’s so much out there that can both help, and, if you’re like me, distract. But mostly help, I swear!

So, have fun visualizing and happy writing!

-Jessica

In a country ravaged by years of war, plague, and death, witches and wizards are blamed for the state of the world and hunted by the U.S. government. Kenadee Coria was only a young girl when her brother was taken prisoner for having magical powers.

Now sixteen years old, Kenadee discovers she too has magical powers and must face the facts: the government is watching, and they have plans for her. She’s given a deadly mission and an impossible ultimatum: the lives of a hidden group of magic refugees, or the safe return of her long-lost brother.
