“Promise, Cedwyn, with all my heart and mind. Promise… promise… promise…”

Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend Review
By: Rae
I loved the map, table of contents, and character list to give the back story for Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend. The scene was set, the word “war” was breathed and became something tallageable on page one. Unbeknownst to me, I was not aware this was a sequel to a previous book, until seeing the cover. I fretted briefly about missing important information but book one was summarized nicely as a reflection occurred in the opening pages before progressing into this book’s story. The storyline is easy to follow and provided a cast of characters just waiting to share more of themselves.
Carpinello weaves a medieval tale of war, a rising queen learning to follow her heart and mind, and the journey of a knight over a sequence of days. I never got confused, I never mis-stepped, and I felt for each character as their quest became known. The scenarios are relatable regardless of the time difference and provides young readers with connectability to their own lives. There was little downtime between action, but it never reached the point of concern to where a young reader would be boggled or lost among facts or details. I worried a little at the scenes of death and displays of abuse or violence. It is not overly graphic, just present, and something to keep in mind for parents.
Overall, the storyline is easy to follow and provided a cast of characters just waiting to share more of themselves. I’m looking forward to seeing the growth of young Guinevere and Cedwyn and getting more Arthurian legend and myth into the mix.
