Cruises
Good morning! I get a lot of questions about whether or not I’ve been on a cruise since my recent release Triplicity is set on one, and in fact, I have! To Alaska, also. We even had a short rescue detour the way they do in the book, but no thefts. And yes, there were moments I looked around and thought, if I squint a little, I could be on the Titanic.
Some other answers to frequently asked cruise questions:
Yes, I did get motion sick, but sleeping was never a problem. After maybe five days, when it was almost over, I started feeling like myself again.
No, it is not very warm on a cruise ship in Alaska in July. Not too terribly many people were swimming on the ship when we were at sea.
Yes, my kids liked the kid’s club more than any other part of the trip.
Yes, it felt like we were on the ship more than we were exploring Alaska.
Yes, I’m glad I’ve been on a cruise, but no, I probably wouldn’t do it again. Maybe a river cruise down the Danube or something like that. I think that might be a nice way to see some of Eastern Europe.
All in all, I was definitely inspired by the ship, the ocean, and Alaska, even though the cruise itself made me a bit nervous. I don’t know about you, but seeing no land in any direction, even though you know you’re not really in the middle of the Pacific, was pretty disorienting. And I don’t trust the ocean that much 😉
There is some culture to the experience that I tried to seep into my story, such as the service and the international feel. It did almost feel uncomfortable, how they took care of you and offered you all the food. Did I mention the food? Honestly, if you’re planning a cruise, be prepared to stick to your guns and say no, thank you, I don’t want all the food!
