The Thirteenth Guardian
by K.M. Lewis
Genre: YA Sci-Fi/Apocalyptic Fantasy
Release Date: June 11th 2019
Summary:
Da Vinci’s secret pales. Michelangelo concealed an explosive truth in his famous Creation of Man fresco in the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican. Everything we have been taught about Eve is wrong—she didn’t cause the fall of man. Instead, Eve carried a far more devastating secret for millennia; one that will change the world forever.
As the modern-day world suffers the cataclysmic effects of the “Plagues of Egypt”, Avery Fitzgerald, a statuesque Astrophysics major at Stanford, discovers that she is mysteriously bound to five strangers by an extremely rare condition that foremost medical experts cannot explain. Thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they race against time to stay alive as they are pursued by an age-old adversary and the world around them collapses into annihilation.
Under sacred oath, The Guardians—a far more archaic and enigmatic secret society than the Freemasons, Templars, and the Priory—protect Avery as she embarks on a daring quest that only legends of old have been on before. Avery must come to terms with the shocking realization that the blood of an ancient queen flows through her veins and that the fate of the world now rests on her shoulders.

The intrigue behind secret societies
Most people will never forget when George W. Bush and John Kerry, the two presidential nominees in 2004, were asked on national television about their involvement in Skull and Bones, the secretive society at Yale to which they belonged. They both completely refused to discuss it, saying it was a secret and nervously laughed it off. Tim Russert went as far as to ask the then president, George W. Bush, if he was prepared to lose the election in order to protect the secrets of the Skull and Bones. His response was chilling. “Oh, I am not going to lose”. He was right—he didn’t lose. He had an eerie matter of fact tone in his voice when he said it, like he knew something the rest of us non-initiates did not know.
When you watch the exchange between George W. Bush and Tim Russert, you get the distinct sense that George W. Bush wields far more power than he lets on—like he has more access to wealth, privilege, and ‘secrets’ than just about everyone else.
Thats what makes secret societies so intriguing for most of us. What do these guys know that we don’t. Why do they tend to have so much more money than everyone else. And why do they get all this access and privilege and guard it so closely. Whether it’s the Priory, Skull and Bones, Illuminati, Freemasons or Knights Templar—these societies have been around for longer than anyone alive today has been alive, and they never discuss their mandate and who is involved. The mystery behind them, and the unshakeable sense that they wield an immense amount of power is what makes secret societies so intriguing.
It is human nature to be fixated and intrigued by things that we don’t understand, want something that we can’t have, and be a part of something that we don’t have access to. Secret societies hit squarely on each of these three base human needs—and thats probably one of the reasons why we can’t stop staring.
Many books have been written and plenty of movies have been made that delve into the world of secret societies. The Thirteenth Guardian takes a completely new perspective on secret societies and why they exist….and it’s not about old guys wearing funny looking hats chanting strange incantations to giant owls. This secret society is way older than all the others combined, and has a far more arcane mission.
