The origin of a witchling.

Noun. (plural witchlings) (fantasy) A young witch.

The origin of witchling happened back in 2013. I was almost done drafting my book Finvarra’s Circus when I came across a picture of a girl with her eyes downcast. Though she radiated immense strength and rebelliousness, something struck me about her posture and why she looked down as if having just been reprimanded. Sera’s character immediately popped into my head and the first thing I knew without a doubt was she was not one to cower to anything, which made the picture even more intriguing.

I remember sitting with the picture when this wave of ideas washed over me, which turned out to be Sera’s history and place within the book’s society. In her world, she’s considered an abomination and a murderer for simply being the seventh born daughter to a witch, which in turn leads to the mother losing her powers and her life. I found this concept so fascinating as I’d always been drawn to the seventh of a seventh folklore, but the tales were typically about boys and their experience as seventhborns a positive one. Seventh born girls are not allowed to practice magic because of societal fears about seventhborns, but ultimately Sera is allowed to join a program where she will learn magic. This is when the word witchling attached itself to the story as Sera is both young in age and young in magic practice.

As I started writing and more pieces came together, Sera’s fiery temper made its appearance. She has a very short fuse, and it typically results in her blowing something up or setting something on fire. In working with Professor Barrington, she learns to channel this anger into something useful, in turn growing her magic and moving closer to being a witch. I loved this aspect of the story because it highlighted how Sera had a lot to learn not only about magic, but life itself, highlighting her position as a witchling all the more.

The book as a whole is a coming of age story, which heavily reinforces the witchling theme for Sera. The original title was actually A Witchling’s Rites since the story is about things that Sera had to experience in order to grow—her rite of passage into adulthood and witchhood. Once it changed to SEVENTH BORN, the word witchling became a part of the series title which I’m ecstatic since I know for Sera, being a witchling is a motivation for her to keep growing and learning until the day she masters magic and can wear the label of witch with pride.

Court playlist

Let me preface this playlist with the fact that most of the music I listen to while writing is lyric-less. Listening to movie soundtracks, lo-fi chill beats, and cello covers helps me focus, so the list below is more of a compilation of songs that I think either the lyrics or tone of the song captures the essence and message of KISS OF THE ROYAL.

(By the way, I recommend ALL the artists on this playlist and their albums. I hope you enjoy!)

  1. Fools by Lauren Acquilina – Almost all of this artist’s songs I could see being on a playlist for this book. She’s so amazingly talented and her lyrics capture love and relationships so well!
  2. Honey by Magic Man – One of my favorite bands of all time and these lyrics have such beautiful imagery.
  3. Out of the Woods by Taylor Swift – I wrote this book right in the midst of the 1989 obsession. Needless to say, a song from that album had to be included.
  4. Bronte by Gotye – Because this song has all the feels.
  5. Legend of Ashitaka by Joe Hisaishi – Joe Hisaishi is one of the best composers of all time. Having pretty much done almost all the Studio Ghibli Films, I think some of his best pieces are in Princess Mononoke. This song in particular is so beautiful and powerful, I think it captures a fantasy/journey theme so perfectly.
  6. Years of War by Porter Robinson – While this is a little different from the rest because it is more electronica, I thought its subject matter was relevant. KISS OF THE ROYAL is set in a world where a war between the Royals and the Forces has been going on for hundreds of years.
  7. Firestone by Kygo – This song is gorgeous, fantastical and reminds me of dragons. The End.
  8. The Cascades by Fleet Foxes – I love Fleet Foxes. Like most of their music, this is song is mellow and woodsy, and I can see this playing in the background during scenes where Ivy and Zach are traveling through the forests of Myria.
  9. Kolnidur by Jonsi – As the featured artist in both How to Train Your Dragon movies, Jonsi is the perfect artist for fantasy and dragons. (hint hint!)
  10. This Love (Will be Your Downfall) by Ellie Goulding – First, love all of Ellie Goulding’s music. Second, could this song be foreshadowing? Better read to find out!
  11. If I Lose Myself by OneRepublic – Not only is OneRepublic amazing (one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to) but this song perfectly encapsulates Ivy’s feelings towards Zach.
  12. Say When by The Fray – Gotta love The Fray. I feel like this song has a lot of painful backstory to it, which is very similar to both Ivy and Zach.
  13. Vagabond by Misterwives – A good representation of Prince Zach. He’s a wanderer, a lone wolf, a vagabond and scoundrel. Enter Ivy…
  14. Emerald by LYRA – I first found this song on the MTV show, Teen Wolf, and fell in love with its haunting and sensual sound.

Excerpt

In less than two hours, Deni would be in a car with me.

I was going to be sick.

“Sienna.” His right eye twitched. He didn’t wear glasses anymore. After laser surgery (Vera’s idea) he didn’t need them. I still wasn’t used to his eyes without the glass cover. “I honestly don’t know about his wife. I assume she’s still around. Let’s just focus on the fact he’s coming to visit, okay? It’ll only be for a few days. And then, we’re off to Cambodia.” He patted my hand. “This means you won’t get much of a break after finals, but you don’t mind showing Deni around a bit, right?”

Did I mind? It was only what I’d dreamed of for the two years since I tore myself out of his arms on the broken shores of Banda Aceh, no matter how hard I tried to keep the memory of Deni in my past.

“No, it’s okay.” I didn’t want to show him my range of emotion. How torn I felt. How huge this was for me to see Deni again after finally getting ready to move on with Spider. I wouldn’t want him putting Deni in a hotel.

I felt like Dad and I should be on the same page about this summer, though. About what Spider asked.

“Want to hear another thing making this summer interesting?”

“Sure.”

“Spider asked me to move in with him.”

Dad choked on a popcorn kernel. “What?” he asked, sputtering. “First Deni is coming, and now a boy wants my daughter to move in with him? Your old dad is going to have a heart attack.”

“Believe me,” I said. “None of this was my idea.”

“Are you and Spider dating? I thought you were just good friends.”

“Well, we aren’t dating, but… He said he wants it to be more.”

It felt weird to talk about this with my dad, but we’d bonded in Indonesia. Things had been a lot better between us since then.

“How do you feel?”

I got up and started to pace. “I like Spider. I always have. But why now? Why did this have to happen the same morning we find out Deni is on his way? I mean, obviously Deni is married but still…having him here will be weird.”

Dad considered me. “Sometimes life presents you with the perfect storm, and it’s up to you to figure out how to navigate your way through it.”

Perfect storm? More like a tsunami.

And I wasn’t ready.

If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.

Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.

Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.

Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.

At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. Excerpt from GOING DOWN IN FLAMES:
He blinked in confusion. “What do you want to know?”
Time to ask the million-dollar question. No matter the pain it caused, she needed to know. “Who is your intended?”
He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter.”
Wrong. “It matters if you plan to spend the rest of your life with her.”
“She’s a friend.” He didn’t meet her gaze.
Bryn heard a door close. Miss Enid and Valmont had retreated into the bedroom to give them privacy.
She inched closer. Electricity sparked between them, making the hair on the back of her neck stand up. “I need to know.”
He took a deep breath and met her gaze. “My intended is Nola.”
No. Freaking. Way.
Nola? His intended was Nola? How in the hell was she supposed to compete against the dark-haired Barbie? She couldn’t. Dropping her hand from his chest, she backed up a step.
Zavien closed the distance between them. “I swear. She’s a friend.”
Wanting to believe, she placed her hand over his heart and searched his eyes for the truth. “If she’s a friend, then what am I?”
He skimmed his fingers along her jaw and down her neck. Warmth radiated from his touch. He settled his hand at the base of her skull, leaned close, and whispered, “You are temptation.”
She held her breath as he lowered his head and brushed his lips against hers. Time seemed to stand still. His mouth moved against hers. Melting against him, she fisted her hands in his shirt and tried to pull him closer. He wrapped his arm around her waist, drawing her body flush against his.
Too soon, he pulled away. “I shouldn’t have done that.”
“I’m not sorry you did.” She traced her fingertips along his jaw. For so long, she’d been unsure of his feelings. Now she knew.
