DO YOU BELIEVE?

As many of you know, the setting for most of THE GHOST CHRONICLES was inspired by the Angel of the Sea, an award-winning bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ that I visited several years ago. This spectacular inn has been featured on several television programs and in magazines throughout the world. Most notably, it was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as one of the “Best Vacations in the World” and included in her television talk show. The Angel of the Sea is also one of the most recognized Victorian structures in the United States. Legend has it that in the late 1960’s, a girl fell to her death at the Angel of the Sea and did at one time, haunt the inn. The story of the girl has been included in several non-fiction books about ghosts in Cape May. My heroine in THE GHOST CHRONICLES, Sarah McConnell, was inspired by this legend. If you’d like to learn more about the legend of the haunting at the Angel of the Sea, you can read all about in this blog post: How She Died.

Angel of the Sea bed and breakfast, Cape May NJ

The Angel of the Sea bed and breakfast is as beautiful and romantic and haunting as I portray it in THE GHOST CHRONICLES series and I’ve truly fallen in love with the place and its rich history. As I write this, I’m working on the third and final book in the trilogy.

the ghost chronicles

One interesting by-product that has come out of the publication of THE GHOST CHRONICLES books is that everyone tells me their ghost stories. It doesn’t matter whether I’m signing at the Angel of the Sea or a Barnes and Noble store, everyone wants to tell me their ghost story. What’s been fascinating for me is finding out that people from all walks of life have a ghost story to tell. Even stranger still, is the fact that there are many, many similarities among the stories. When they’re telling me their stories, people have no way of knowing I’ve heard something similar before, but it’s something I’ve definitely been noticing. Basically, I hear the same stories repeatedly…and it’s made an impression on me.

Among the most common ghostly encounters people have told me over and over again are the following:

  • “I didn’t believe in ghosts at all until I had this experience, or saw XYZ with my own eyes.” (If I had a dollar for every person who has told me that, I could retire.)
  • “I awoke to something shaking my bed, as if someone were kicking the end of it.”
  • “I awoke to someone shaking or touching my feet, as if someone were trying to wake me up or get my attention.”
  • “I awoke to see someone standing at the foot of my bed.” (Many times they’ll mention the ghost looked more scared than they were, as if startled someone was in their Many people have mentioned that the ghost was in old-fashioned clothes.)
  • Many people have said they felt the presence of a loved one who had passed away. Unmistakable smells (like cigar or perfume) or noises only associated with that person, like tinkering with their tools or a favorite motorcycle in the garage, things like that.
  • Many people have had their name clearly called out to them when no one else was present. Sometimes they can identify the voice as someone deceased, other times they don’t recognize the voice at all.
  • Many people report to me that ghostly activity is not steady, but seems to ebb and flow, coming back and forth during different times of the year. Months will go by and nothing will happen, then all of a sudden they’ll be a few weeks with a lot of odd activity.
  • Many police officers (including a police chief of a major town in NJ) have told me that police officers don’t report many of the ghostly incidents they experience for fear of ridicule, but that they do happen and they only sometimes mention it to each other. Most commonly when they have a building under surveillance at night and catch a glimpse of something they weren’t expecting to see.
  • People responsible for building security who told me they chase ‘phantom’ sounds and indistinct shadow figures that appear on security cameras, only to discover that no one is in the building or on those floors or those locked offices, and there is no rational explanation.
  • Hospital and medical personnel who have told me flat out they believe in ghosts because of all the activity and unexplained things that happen in hospitals and nursing homes.
  • The unmistakable sound of footsteps which defy explanation, many times in homes, sometimes in offices or businesses.
  • Indistinct shadow figures that are seen repeatedly in homes, but there’s no explanation.
  • A sudden, very loud knock or bang on a wall, as if someone were trying to get their attention, but no one is there, and again, there is no logical explanation for the noise.

For what it’s worth, only one person has ever told me they’ve gotten a bad feeling from ghostly activity. Most people tell me they get the feeling a presence is there and just trying to let them know.

So where do you stand on ghosts? Do you believe? After all the stories I’ve heard, I have to say…I keep a very open mind.

Guest Post: Never Too Many To Read

I grew up in a musical family, my mom and dad were singers. The dining room of our West Philly row home doubled as my parent’s rehearsal space. As a kid, I remember hearing acapella, intricate melodies and well-laid harmonies for up to 12 hours a day. My parents believed if vocal arrangements were pristine sans music, musical accompaniment could later act as the cherry on top. It was there that my love for lyrics and storytelling were born.

As a singer songwriter, I am always aware of how the balance of words and music affect a piece. If the music feels more ethereal are the words too direct and to the point? Should they be more stream of consciousness? If the music is soulful are the lyrics earthy and accessible enough? Basic truth, some words don’t work well when sung. Finally, when I write songs I collaborate a lot.

I am often asked about the differences between writing songs and writing literature. When I write stories, it is a solo effort. There is nothing to hide behind. Beautiful melodies are not there to enhance. The words must stand alone. Even so, I am discovering, writing literature heightens my senses. Something magical occurs when I write stories. I often hear sound of a different kind. I am hyper aware of the flow. I say words out loud to experience them. I tune into the cadence although, my readers may not ever speak the words I write aloud. I am listening for the rhythm, syllables, the beat. I want my reader to unconsciously tune into that and hear dynamics in the way they would a song. I guess in the end, the music is never really far away.

Interview with Kyle
The Book Junkie Reads YA on May 15

How would you describe your style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
With my writing I like to follow Stephen King’s advice of “leave out the boring bits.” My goal is to always put the reader right into the middle of the action. Every scene should be worthwhile and should follow the fast paced rhythm of the novel as a whole. If something isn’t needed or slows down the piece as a whole then it needs to be reworked or cut. We should always be learning something new or moving forward with the story.

What are some of your writing/publishing goals for this year?
This year I plan to finish and release the Ashes, release the Audiobook for the Flames, complete editing on a solo YA project and finish up an adult mystery book. I also plan to never sleep again, apparently.

Do you feel that writing is an ingrained process or just something that flows naturally for you?
Writing is a learned thing. No one is an incredible writer starting out and even good writers often have less than perfect first drafts. Writing is about trial and error and editing.

If you could spend one-week with 5 fictional character, who would they be?
I’d love to spend some time with Sherlock Holmes, Tony Stark, Beatrice from Much Ado, Dr. Gregory House, and Rocket Raccoon just to watch them argue for a bit and take notes.

Where would you spend one full year, if you could go ANYwhere? What would you do with this time?
If I had a full year I’d probably try to travel to as many different countries as possible and experience as many different cultures as I could. Good writing comes from life experience and travel is an amazing way to achieve that.

Can you share your next creative project(s)? If yes, can you give a few details?
Unfortunately most of my creative projects are under wraps, but The Flames is out now and the audiobook should be following this year!  In addition the summation of the Feud Trilogy, the Ashes, will hopefully be released early next year!

Jon Eric Preston received his Theatre degree from Florida State University after returning from the London program. He earned top honors narrating in the Dramatic Interpretation category on the Speech and Debate team, and performed professionally in Children’s Theatre companies and did National Tours of A Christmas Carol, Twelfth Night, and Othello.

As a SAG BookPAL and a father reading to his two boys for more than 12 years, moving into the booth to record audiobooks was a natural and joy filled progression.
He is thrilled to be narrating and giving voice to the characters for Kyle Prue’s Feud Trilogy. He is thrilled to be narrating and giving voice to the characters for Kyle Prue’s Feud Trilogy.

91dc6-bayliss-new-3-1-568x1024AUTHOR BIO:
They say write what you know, so Jessica Bayliss did. Her story, BREATHLESS, was inspired by her own experience running out of air on a scuba dive—except without all the steamy romance and eerie paranormal happenings. Alas, real life. Obviously, she survived. Her genre-bending fiction holds a little something for everyone. A lover of ghost tales and horror since her days scanning VHS rental shelves—admittedly with eyes half-averted from the gory covers—a touch of the mysterious always finds a home in Jessica’s work. Romance with a dash of supernatural. Horror with a bit of humor. You get the gist. Jessica also writes across age groups and is a firm believer in the motto: there is a new reader born every day, whether young or not-so-young.

Look for her upcoming releases: TEN PAST CLOSING, a YA contemporary thriller (Sky Pony Press, Spring 2018), and BROKEN CHORDS, a YA horror novella (Leap Books, October 2017). You can find her story “Care of the Undead Dog” in ZOMBIE CHUNKS, which came out earlier this year. Read about all of Jessica’s books and stories here.
